Awaiting

So far his son went
Beyond replies to the letters he sent
So away he has gone
Leaving the awaiting alone

Each dusk when the birds fly
Homewards they cry
His wife seeks news
Hoping a familiar view

He tells her to wait
May be their son is late
Some hurdles he may have met
Ultimately to return he must be set

A decade ago they'd bid adieu
With a promise to return in a days few
He'd assured to come back
He'd always remember homeward track

But distant lands and their mystic sands
Lures galore and comforts in hands
He soon forgot those who sought
His side, in their oldness fraught

To this day they wait
Hoping that their son is late
Each knowing the truth within
Their child will no more be seen

    1. Hi Jayashree,

Unfortunately what you say is more often than not becoming the nightmare for old aged parents.

      Thanks for reading.

  3. Mr Anupam, I take my hat off to you!
    Brilliant piece again!
Wherever we are whatever we are it's really important to take some time out of our busy daily schedules in our so called "awesome" lives and have a chat with our parents.

  6. Wow !! I enjoyed reading it !! As in, its on a sad situation but I couldn't stop reading. Its like it pulled me in and I came out only after reading it completely !!
    Keep writing :) :)
BTW there's this movie called Hachiko in which the dog waits for his master unaware that he's no more. When I see/know people are waiting with that hope, it saddens my heart.

  7. Hi Anupam! Lovely Poem. This reminds me the story of Meghumi Yokota, a japanese girl abducted by North Korea. Her parents are still waiting for her.Do read her story on the web.

  8. Touching, topical and direct, the poem effectively captures the ungratefulness, cruelty and treachery of the current generations.

  23. A very simple and smooth writing, it seems. Poetry is what I am in love with.
Your creation very gently pulled me to the solitary world of those old parents whose weak eyes are searching for their son. It's a reality for many of the parents secluded by their children to die alone in their dingy abode.
I liked the simplicity of your writing. :)
